There are different options of having an orthodontic treatment.

Invisalign is a comfortable way of having an orthodontic treatment. You need to be committed to the treatment, and wear the aligners all the time except for eating or for brushing your teeth.

You can usually have the clear, see-through ceramic braces, but sometimes it will be necessary to place a metal brace on the lower teeth.

A small square is attached to each tooth, and can not be removed, until the treatment is finished. A wire is placed to ensure a correct movement of the teeth.

In a very few cases an orthodontic treatment can be carried out with a “retainer-brace”, but usually a fixed brace or Invisalign is necessary to obtain a good result.

When an orthodontic treatment with active appliances is finalised, the teeth will have a tendency of moving back towards the position they were in before treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to retain the teeth in the new, straight position.

When you have been given removable retainers or retainer aligners, they will need to be worn:

  • Full time for the first 3 months (only take out for meals and tooth brushing)
  • 3 hours per day and all night for 4 months.
  • every night for the following 12 months

This means that for at least a period 19 months, retainers are necessary. After this period of time, the teeth are more stable in their straight position, however, they will for many years have a tendency to remember partly, where they were before. Therefore it is recommended that you hold onto the retainers and wear them around 3 times a week to make sure the teeth stay straight. Unfortunately we do not know, how long time the teeth still have a tendency to move back towards their previous position.
